Jack - almost 2!

Here is a summary of Jack at 22/23 months old.  Can't believe his 2nd birthday is in about 4 weeks!

Stats:  Jack weighs about 25 lbs and is about 35 inches tall.  He is outgrowing a lot of 18-24 month shirts and size 2T shirts fit best.  Some of his 12-18 month pants still fit.  He still wears a size 7 shoe with plenty of room to grow.  We've had a handful of warm days and discovered that he needs a bunch of new short sleeved shirts.  He can fit into his from last summer but they are way too short.  His shorts from last year still fit :)

Sleeping:  Jack is still an excellent sleeper.  He usually throws a fit when you tell him it is nap time or bed time, but by the time he is upstairs in his room, he's totally fine and easy to put to bed.  He gets to read a few books (favorites include Good Night Gorilla, First 100 Trucks, his Bible, and then whatever the favorite book of the week happens to be) and sing a few songs.  Sometimes he requests to sing himself and other times he wants Mommy or Daddy to sing.  Then we just lay him in his crib and he goes right to sleep.  He has started sleeping with a light blanket and loves it.  He wakes up happy most of the time and in the morning likes to sing to us over the monitor.  So far, no attempts to climb out, even though he easily could.  Knock on wood... those wood floors would hurt.  He goes to bed around 7:15-7:30 and is usually talking in his crib by 7:15 the next morning.  He takes a 2-3 hour nap starting around 12:45.

Eating:  Jack has actually gotten a little more adventurous with his eating this month.  He's tried and enjoyed lasagna, enchiladas, several soups, and other combinations of foods that he previously has rejected.  He usually eats a good amount of food at each meal, but every now and then he doesn't like what he is offered and doesn't eat as much as normal.  Breakfast is probably his favorite meal.  He loves dry cereal, yogurt, eggs, bacon, pancakes, waffles, oatmeal, and fruit.  For lunch, he usually has something related to cheese and turkey (on a sandwich or a la carte), peanut butter or almond butter (on a sandwich, on crackers, or made into granola balls), and fruit.  He has attempted veggies and dip a few times and really enjoys dipping things into ketchup, salsa, etc.  His favorite vegetable is still sweet potatoes, but he has recently enjoyed broccoli with cheese sauce and will eat vegetables as part of soup, so we are making progress.  He still gets a lot of fruit/veggie purees or smoothies.  For dinner, he is typically offered a meat, a starch, a vegetable, and maybe another fruit depending on how much he's already had that day.  He could eat his weight in macaroni if we let him.  He still likes beans and loves our weekly Chipotle dinner.

One of his favorite pastimes is asking for specific foods or snacks that he likes.  Sometimes the answer of "no" or "not now" will be accepted, and other times, a fit will be thrown.  Such is life with an almost 2 year old :)

Playing:  Jack loves to play with anyone but he is also quite good at entertaining himself.  He is better at independent play than Elise was at his age, probably because he usually has a 4 year old in the room with him instead of all by himself.  He absolutely loves trucks, trains, cars, balls, and anything boy.  He spends a lot of time these days pushing his Green Toys vehicles around the play room.  He seems quite athletic for his age and is constantly wanting to climb something.  He figured out how to climb the small rock wall side of our Step2 Woodland Climber that is in the back yard and is much more independent at the playground.  He loves to go on walks around the neighborhood, play outside or at the park, go to the zoo/aquarium/etc, go to the library or Barnes and Noble to play with the train table, and basically do anything involving his Daddy.  He also loves his classroom at church and will try to open the door and walk right in when we drop him off.  He is quite the little jumper and LOVES the trampoline.  He can even lift his knees toward his chest when he jumps now.  I'm so thankful for a large basement... the trampoline was essential to getting us through the winter!  We are thinking about getting the Step2 Train and Track Table for his birthday.  I think it looks great for independent or joint play with trains or cars... right up his alley!  I also like that it can clean up easily and turn into a table.  When he's older we could use the lid to build train tracks, play Legos, etc.

Learning:  Over the last few months, Jack has transitioned from mostly phrases/some sentences to almost exclusively sentences.  For example, instead of saying "Help,

please!", he will say, "I need some help please Mommy."  He also asks a lot of questions, like, "How is your dinner, Mommy?"  "Are you going running, Mommy?", "Want to play playroom, Mommy?", and "Does that sound good, Mommy?"  He can sing 6-8 lines of a song with quite a bit of accuracy and strings several sentences together.  I need to do a better job of working with him on letter sounds.  He knows quite a few but I'm sure he could get them all quickly if I put in a little effort.  We can actually exchange sentences with him and have little conversations.  His voice is so cute!

Potty training:  We attempted potty training about a month ago and he actually got the concept very quickly.  He went on the potty 6-8 times the first day but by the second day would say, "I want to go pee pee big potty" and then run upstairs only to sit on the potty and cry or just not want to sit on it at all and then end up with an accident right next to the potty.  This was very similar to Elise's first attempt at potty training.  So, we stopped and will try again this summer.  Hopefully he will decide on his own when he's ready to do it and that it will be sooner rather than later :)  He often asks for a new diaper.

Funny sayings:

We turned his car seat around last week and when he got in it, he excitedly exclaimed, "Mama fixed my car seat!  Thank you, mama!"  A few minutes later, he said, "My car seat is just like Elise!"

He loves to be "just like Elise" and is always saying things like, "I do puzzles just like Elise.  I eat Cheerios just like Elise.  I get hat just like Elise.  I read Bible just like Elise.  I climb this (usually something too difficult for him at a park) just like Elise."

I recently got him a sun hat and every time he puts it on, he thanks me profusely for it.  He must enjoy not having the sun in his eyes!

I was sick with a sinus infection last week, and if I coughed or blew my nose he often asked if I was okay.  Sweet boy.  He also randomly comes up to us and says, "I love you" and gives us a hug.

Mike was putting him to bed last night and he said, "I need some more water.  Mama will go get it.  OH MAAAMAAAA!!!!"

Sometimes he likes to pray before meals and it usually comes out like this:  "Dear God thank you my food thank you my family AMEN!"

He loves the view from facing forward in the car and yesterday exclaimed, "I see a city bus up there!  You think there are people in it?"

Mike put him in the car to go to church and he said, "It's a nice day.  I go to zoo with Maddie and Miss Rose." (friends of ours)

Mike: "Jack, do you want your strawberries?"
Jack: "Yes, I want my strawberries.  I want my cereal too.  Yes, let's do that."

Ahhh, happy 23 months little dude!  We love you!

Stacking cups... there are actually about 10 cups in this tower!  I just realized how terrible I have been about taking pictures with my camera while they are playing.  I often take pictures on my phone but rarely get the big camera out.  I will work on that for my next post.

Busy with fire trucks, school buses, dump trucks, cars, and trains

Favorite new accessory.  He asks for it if I forget to bring it outside when it is sunny.

They both love their hats.  The brand is Sunday Afternoons.  I got them at REI.  Elise wears the size 5-7 years (and has since she was 3.5) and Jack wears the size 2-5 years.

The Little Mermaid

Yesterday I took Elise to Annapolis to see a children's theater production of "The Little Mermaid, Jr."  We had such a fun day.  After church, we drove down to Annapolis (about 45 minutes) and ate lunch at Panera Bread (Elise's choice).  Then we headed to the theater.  She was so excited and was mesmerized throughout the show.  Afterwards, we hit up a local park and went for her first trip to Dairy Queen.  I couldn't believe that a small ice cream cone was almost $3!  Anyway, she was so worn out that she fell asleep on our drive back to Towson.  I am pretty sure she hasn't fallen asleep in the car since 2011 :)  Looking forward to more mother/daughter dates in our future!

Terrible angle (try taking a self portrait with the big camera) but we had fun!

Easter 2013

We had a great Easter this year.  Elise loved doing the resurrection eggs that Gram and Grandpa sent and really grasped (as much as you can at age 4) the events leading up to Jesus's death on the cross and resurrection.  Our church did an awesome job at the services on Good Friday and Easter Sunday, and we enjoyed some quality family time and a yummy dinner at home.  It was raining, so we improvised and did an egg hunt in the playroom after nap time.

The kids enjoyed stickers, books, and frisbees from Gram and Grandpa.  Elise got some new card games from us and Jack got a basketball cup and train book.

Someone was anxious to get the party started!

Jack loved his goodies

Finding eggs.  Most of them had a few Goldfish and there were a few that had an M&M and jelly bean :)

Elise - 4 years old summary

So I started writing this post in February and never quite finished it... ooops!

Having a 4 year old is so much fun!  Elise is so independent, helpful, kind, funny, and really enjoyable to be around (the vast majority of the time, haha).

Stats:  Her height is approximately 43 inches (95%) and weight is approximately 38.5 lbs (75%).  She wears mostly 5T or girls sizes XS and S with a size 12.5 shoe.  (Edited to add:  By April, she now wears a size 6 or girls S and still a size 12.5 shoe).

Sleeping:  Elise still loves to sleep and needs about 12-12.5 hours total throughout the day.  We made the decision in January to start the transition to rest time instead of nap time because it was taking Elise too long to fall asleep at night (and then she would be tired in the morning, and then cranky after her nap, and then take too long to fall asleep... bad cycle).  We've been doing this for about a month now and she still naps about half the time but it is going well and she is happier.  The other day just before nap time, in a somber tone, she looked at me and said, "Mommy, I don't think I'm going to be able to stay up with you today.  I'm too tired."

Transition to Rest Time:  She's had an Onaroo Teach Me Time clock in her room since we converted her crib to a bed.  It is awesome and worth every penny.  It makes time changes and travel adjustments a piece of cake.  We set it to turn green at 7:15 and she can get up any time after that (usually up by 7:30 at the latest).  Anyway, I did some research and ended up buying a second clock, which we will eventually use in Jack's room.  It is the Onaroo Ok to Wake clock (which doesn't have all the features of the Teach Me Time clock but does has a nap feature).  When it is rest time, we set it for 30 minutes, turn it on, and then when it turns green she can get up.  I gave her the option of reading books or playing quietly in her room during rest time, but she insists on turning the light off and "resting" in her bed.  So, she falls asleep about half the time but I think it gets her the sleep that she needs without giving her too much.  I try to wake her after an hour to an hour and a half if she does fall asleep.

Eating:  Elise is still a great eater, especially when compared to her brother.  She is very predictable on the foods that she likes to eat, and has learned to say "that isn't my favorite" to let me know that she doesn't like something... and most of the time she'll eat it anyway without complaining.  She drinks mostly water and has plain milk several times a week.  Juice is an extremely special treat... she eats a ton of fruit and doesn't need the extra sugar :)

Breakfast favorites:  Yogurt, dry cereal, oatmeal, eggs, bacon, bagels, waffles, pancakes, fruit
Lunch favorites:  Peanut butter or almond butter (in sandwich form, cracker form, dipping in apples form, granola ball form, etc), cheese, cucumbers, fruit, turkey, grilled cheese
Dinner favorites:  Chicken, steak, turkey, ham, roast, pork tenderloin, (not ground beef), rice, pasta, asparagus, broccoli, sweet potatoes, (not carrots), fruit, corn, peas, beans, macaroni, quesadilla
Snack favorites:  Raisins, granola bars, pretzels, crackers, squeezy packs

Independence:  Elise does so many things for herself at this age.  She likes to dress herself before she comes out of her room in the morning.  Her favorite clothing items include leggings and anything pink or sparkly.  She can turn clothes inside out, put on her jackets and zip them, button her sweaters, brush her teeth well, serve snacks, clear her dishes without being asked, put her clothes away without being asked, etc.  She is usually very eager to go get things for me or Jack and will sometimes even ask if I need help with anything.

Playing:  Elise and Jack love being together.  Their idea of a good time usually includes running, jumping, climbing, or hiding on the couch.  Due to the age and gender difference, they usually don't play with the same toys at the same time unless we are all doing something together.   The other day I peeked in the playroom and had to laugh because Elise had dumped out her dolls and was busy changing their clothes and shoes just a foot away from Jack, who was completely engrossed in moving cars around the duplo track.

With peers, Elise is very interactive and a very good friend.  She loves to play with her friends at preschool, at church, and on playdates.  Favorite things include dolls, princesses (especially Ariel and Cinderella), pretend play, Lego friends (she plays quietly with these for very long periods of time!), the trampoline, playing at the park/zoo/aquarium/etc, running, and playing games (Candyland, cards, etc).  She enjoys going for walks, playing chase with her brother, and going anywhere that Mommy goes.

Favorite things:  Elise primarily asks to read her Disney Princess books or bibles.  She loves to play princess, dress up as a princess, pretend to swim like a mermaid, etc.  When she gets to watch a DVD, she either watches Boz the Bear, Veggie Tales, one of the Preschool Prep DVDs, or one of the Leapfrog DVDs. On a special occasion, she loves to have a popcorn date and watch Cinderella.  She loves jewelry, shoes, and clothes.  She always talks about her next trip to Texas to visit her grandparents, aunts, and uncles.

Learning:  If you get Elise in the right mood, she will write her name, write other letters, draw things, sound out words, read sight words, etc.  She is definitely capable of all of that and I try to provide opportunities and encourage her but I don't want to bribe her.  She does not typically enjoy coloring or drawing.  She finally developed a good writing grip around her 4th birthday and after going back and forth for a long time, we're convinced that she'll be right-handed.  We've been working through the  "Get Ready for the Code" book and she likes it (and rarely ever wants to do any other workbooks).  At first I thought she was too far ahead for it since she already knows a lot of phonics, but it has really helped her letter writing and following directions.  She prefers using the little Crayola Pipsqueaks markers.

What fun it is to have a sweet little girl!  We love you, Elise!  Here are a few pictures from January and February.

Snow and Easter Egg Hunt

The poor blog is so far behind.  I'm really going to make an effort to post more often, even if it is just a quick post.  We've had a great month in Baltimore.  Sadly, it is still cold (as in, hats and gloves most days), but surely spring is coming soon.  I know I will be thankful for living up here when July and August roll around!

This weekend we went to an Easter Egg Hunt at the church where Elise goes to preschool.  The kids had a great time decorating bags, playing games (Elise won a prize by throwing a bean bag in a really small hole!), collecting Easter eggs, and learning about the events leading up to Jesus's death and resurrection.  The church did a great job.  Here are the kids hunting for eggs...

And saying "cheese" but of course not looking at the camera...

Elise was so excited that she got to have part of a lollipop.

Super cheese

Kids being silly.  They love each other so much!

Then today we actually got a lot of snow.  It hasn't snowed too much in March so we weren't expecting much but we actually got about 5 inches.  Of course, I had already put away all the snow pants and couldn't find them in the storage area, so no sledding, but the kids still had fun!

Jack looks so big here!

You can see how deep the snow is...
