Okay, so Mike and I am not fans of traveling/road tripping/sightseeing with kids, unless it doesn't disrupt any naps or nighttime sleep. No matter how cool the destination is, once the routines are off, there goes the rest of the day (and the next day too). It is probably quite sad that we've lived on the East Coast for 14 months and have yet to venture farther than the airport, which is about 35 minutes from our house. However, I must acknowledge that we live within 25 minutes of a ton of fun things to do, so we don't feel the need to travel farther than that for entertainment. Anyway, this month we decided to experiment a little and had the opportunity to spend a day in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, and a few days (and a night!) in Washington DC. The verdict is that we had a blast in both places, but I still think it is exhausting (and crazy) to travel with kids. My sweet 17 month old sleeps okay in the car, if it is time for a nap, but my sweet 3.5 year old does not, and is VERY sensitive to missed sleep.
Harpers Ferry (no apostrophe, I checked) is a cute little historic town with lots of trails and hiking. We went with a group of people that Mike does research with at Johns Hopkins. The kids were troopers and were very patient while we waited for everyone to arrive and then waited for/ate lunch. Elise walked/ran all day long and had a blast. Jack spent about half his time walking/running and half being carried or riding in the stroller. The kids had a blast walking on a bridge across a river and then along a gravel trail. There were plenty of sticks and leaves for everyone.
